Default Nintendo DS hits 100 million in unit sales

Nintendo has managed to sell its 100 millionth Nintendo DS portable game console sometime this week. The 100M figure includes cumulative sales of Nintendo DS, DS Lite and DSi since its launch in early 2005. While the growth curve remains consistent, the number of game titles selling above the 1 million mark is increasing, now at 83.

The Nintendo DSi is scheduled to go on sale in the United States on April 3, 2009. It includes two cameras, the ability to record, manipulate and play sound files. It will also allow users to customize or personalize their DSi experience.

At the end of December, 2008, there were a total of 83 Nintendo DS titles which had shipped more than 1 million copies each. There were seven titles that had shipped 10 million or more copies.

This article on VG Chartz shows the history in pictures, with Nintendo DS selling 5,270,000 units by the end of March 2005. By the end of March 2006 with the introduction of DS Lite in Japan, 16,730,000 units had been shipped. By the end of March 2007 Nintendo had reached the 40,290,000 sales mark. And by the end of March 2008 it was 70,600,000.

The growth appears fairly constant over time ever since the launch of DS Lite. If it continues, by this time next year there will be 131,00,000 Nintendo DS units sold.

Most of the huge increases in sales come from hardware revisions. There's something in the Japanese mind that compels them to always ditch the old model for the new one, even if there's no significant improvements. And that's not including things like limited edition colors or bundles.
