ok, my mate's ps3 just got ylod fix, and he tried to update to 3.01 (i've heard about the blu-ray issues, so bleh) and it got stuck in the 8002F1F9 loop, where it gets to about 67%, then says the update failed etc. and freezes. when you restart it it says the last attempt was cancelled and it will try again. you can't cancel it. infinite loop fun!
we tried re-downloading the data to a flash drive and restarting (no luck), then we formatted his hard drive and lo and behold, no display, no hdd/wifi lights, no signs of life aside from the power/disc lights. after around 20 seconds it turns off. he just got it back, and now it's cinder blocked. any help?

try to get in to recovery mode first and update using a usb flash drive. If that dosn"t work then you"ll probably have to send it to sony. For future reference tho I think formating the hdd was your fatal mistake
i've tried everything in the recovery menu and it only brought me full circle to the update loop again. if i quick format the HDD in MY ps3, i have to restore file system, database, reset settings and restore ps3 system, and only then can i watch the update bar die again. then the only way to stop the update loop is format the HDD. CIRCLES!
i just feel sorry for my friend, he got one day with his ps3 before it broke again... and all i wanted to do was show him TEH SPARKELZ!1 on 3.00.
worth getting a new mobo? he got the YLOD fixed by "this guy", so naturally the warranty is seven shades of VOID. launch model 60gb, btw.

yea probably not worth it to get a new mobo. You might want to try to get a HDD if you have one lying around because i don't think that its worth it to buy one.
fair point, but i've already tried the hdd from my working ps3 in it, and nothing. i might backup and go recovery menu on it (his ps3, my hdd), but at the end of the day i'm risking my data for his dodgy ps3.
bleh. all his data is already backed up, so he is contemplating selling up and slimming down.
