yeah, it deletes everything on the hdd and reinstalls the os... basically like a pandoras battery

hey wants to defrag, meaning clean it out, not erase everything from it.

Correct. Just like a computer, to make the performance better by geting rid of the fragmented space. I thought there would be a hidden button combo lol, i mean you really never know with sony

There is no reason to defrag a ps3 hard drive. It is FAT32. Only NTFS drives need to be defragged because of the way windows uses the file system. That's why macs don't come with defragging software built it. The ps3 doesn't need to to be defragged.

That is NOT a defrag you silly person.

@Bolt
Don't their hard drives still write data based on segments and tracks, etc? Or is the data distributed in a way that is not random?

I'm pretty sure you still need to defrag on FAT32.

hmm I did some research. Since FAT32 partitions can only hold 4GB per file, the PS3 HDD can't be FAT32 because of the huge game data files. I found that it is actually a version of CellFS. (Google it) Sony has used it before. Defragging this kind of partition is useless, and dangerous. If you want more speed buy a faster HDD.
