Default Coming back to Wii Homebrew need Advice

Okay been a few months since I've used my Wii for anything more than watching Youtube vids in my room. Now I've decided I'd like to start things up again.

I havern't updated my Wii during that time (it says it's on version 3.3E). What I would like to know is if I can update my Wii and if there's any nice custom things I can install onto the system. I have the Homebrew Channel installed (v.1.0.1, IOS 4.78).

I want to run some backups I've had for ages (originals are unreadable, my fault for putting them into my stack of unused discs from the PS1 days >< ) but mostly just wanna sit back and *** *** through some good ol retro games.

So basicly I just need advice on the System Menu and any customs i can add to it, rest I can figure out myself
Just thought I should ask before I make my Wii explode or something

If you have the homebrew channel already, there is a program out where you can update to 4.0 and still have the homebrew channel installed to take advantage of the 4.0 features.
