Default Top 10 PSP Games of 2010

    Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker
Dev: Kojima Productions | Pub: Konami

Who would have thought that a full-fledged installment in the Metal Gear Solid series would be headed to the PSP? Hideo Kojima's latest opus drops you into Big Boss' sneaking suit once again and adds yet another chapter in the already completely off-the-wall story inhabited by characters named after animals and snakes of various physical states. Even though MGS has historically been a single player experience, Peace Walker tries its hand at cooperative play and seems to have pulled it off as Jeremy Parish suggests, "Kojima wants you to play this with a friend, and you should."

    Valkyria Chronicles 2
    Dev: Sega | Pub: Sega

Whether you considered Valkyria Chronicles to be a really good strategic RPG with an awesome visual style, or a fantastic HD-generation update to the tactical gameplay of Jagged Alliance, you came to the same basic conclusion we did: it was an awesome PS3 game. While it's a bit saddening to not see another HD-generation follow-up, the fact that we're getting any sort of sequel is still good news. Not only does this follow-up maintain the class-based real/turn-based strategic gameplay of the original, but it also adds some new classes and multiplayer modes. Plus, it fits in your pocket.

    MLB 10: The Show
    Dev: SCEA | Pub: SCEA

The previous incarnation is quite possibly the best baseball videogame ever, so '10 has to impress us with the little things while keeping the original mechanics in-place: calling pitches as a catcher, introducing the Futures Game, and having small stadium animations like a working splash counter at AT&T Park are a nice start. If they can fix the online play (and those loading times) this year, '10 is likely to take the mantle from '09 as the best baseball game ever. Spring can't get here soon enough.

    Parasite Eve: The 3rd Birthday
    Dev: Square | Pub: Square

Square's classic horror series, based on a fairly popular Japanese novel, is expected to return from a nearly decade-long absence this year with The 3rd Birthday. In keeping with the series theme of evolution, this latest chapter doesn't look to be an RPG like the original Parasite Eve or a survival horror game like its predecessor; instead, Square seems to be gunning (literally) for a third-person shooter. All the original creators seem to be accounted for, and the beautiful, heat-packin' police lady Aya Brea is still the lead character, so we're expecting great things... especially now that the game has shifted from its original platform (mobile phones) to the much more enticing choice of PSP.

    Resident Evil Portable
    Dev: Capcom | Pub: Capcom

Will it be the next chapter in the main Resident Evil story? Portable Gun Survivor sans lightgun? We don't know exactly, but according to Chris Kramer on the official Capcom blog, "It's not a 'remake' of a previous RE game, but an all-new title created specifically for the PSP platform, with the PSP Go in mind." We're going to give Capcom the benefit of the doubt and assume that this'll be another exciting zombie/infected slaying adventure -- after all, both Grand Theft Auto and God of War proved developers can bring the big console titles to Sony's handheld. And no matter what, there's no way it could be as bad as Resident Evil: Gaiden.

    Persona 3 Portable
    Dev: Atlus | Pub: Atlus

Persona 3 was a fantastic late addition to the PlayStation 2 RPG library. This past fall in Japan, Atlus brought back P3 for the PSP, and it's another great reason to try it if you missed it before (we're betting it'll make it out here for 2010). P3P actually refits itself well for the handheld by using 2D screens when moving around the school and town, and further improves the main game by adapting Persona 4's improvements to the battle system. The biggest addition, though, is that you can play as a girl, which obviously makes certain "interactions" with the male cast much different.

    Final Fantasy Agito XIII
    Dev: Square | Pub: Square

Final Fantasy Agito XIII, along with the multiplatform Final Fantasy XIII and and PS3-exclusive Final Fantasy Versus XIII, makes up Square Enix's Fabula **** Crystallis. Confused yet? So are we! But more Final Fantasy is never a bad thing, and Agito, as the PSP-exclusive version, looks like it borrows the combat system from the excellent Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core. We might go into Final Fantasy overload in 2010, but there's always room for another, high-quality Square RPG on our shelf (or pocket).

    Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep
    Dev: Square | Pub: Square

Square Enix's Disney-laden action role-playing series heads to PSP for the first time, but Kingdom Hearts fans might be a little shocked to find out that Birth By Sleep's main character is not the series' protagonist so far, Sora. A prequel to the original game, BBS has you playing as Terra, Ventus, and Aqua -- three characters with elemental affinities. The game also features a revamped battle system unlike the other titles in the series. These changes, and the game's beautiful vibrant graphics have us excited to see just how the Kingdom Hearts series evolves.

    Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake
Dev: SuperVillain Studios | Pub: SCEA

Persistent delays and online problems made the much-anticipated Fat Princess hit some negativity earlier in 2009. But Fistful of Cake is set to redeem the princess-rescuing adventure in a portable fashion. For the most part, Fistful of Cake looks just as good as the console version, though the number of friends you can gather together online has dropped slightly (16 on PSP as opposed to 32 on PSN). But that's still a strong multiplayer showing, and more than enough to have some mad-cap fun with your friends. Heck, Fistful of Cake will actually have more modes and maps than the original PS3 incarnation. The original Fat Princess felt like it would have been better on Sony's handheld -- soon we'll get to find out if that's true.

SOCOM: US Navy SEALS Fire Team Bravo 3
Dev: Slant Six Games | Pub: SCEA

It'd be easy for developer Slant Six to just take the solid gameplay mechanics of SOCOM US Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 2, and just update the textures and call it a day. But they had to start adding new features; stuff like the new campaign, weapons customization, regenerating health, and even a rudimentary cover system. But by far the craziest new addition is a whole co-op mode -- which helps make this portable version feel closer to its big PS3 brother. In short, Fireteam Bravo 3 doesn't look like just another PSP SOCOM game with a higher number -- it looks like a legitimate third-person shooter that happens to be on a handheld.

Not yet in English, therefore, not yet worth it to be on the list.
